Tunes for Mademoiselle. John Martin (Piano), Wirripang (Wirr 034)

John Martin has compiled a collection of rags, dances, blues and other miniatures from composers as widely known as George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Elena Kats-Chernin and Ann Carr-Boyd to newer discoveries such as Phillip Wilcher (the “fifth Wiggle”).

They are all highly melodic, some showing feats of virtuosic flair, whilst others are interesting journeys of harmonic and rhythmic delight. But all are ideal concert pieces for pianists from the student to the professional. Engaging titles such as Dizzy Fingers, Blue Tomato, Blue Bay, Sapphire Rag, The Joker, Marigold, Bats in the Belfry, and Northbridge Blues all convey thoughts of time, place, mood or an evocative image.

Whilst not all the works are by Australian composers, a great many are. As well, Wirripang is endeavouring to ensure that Australian musicians are recorded.

John Martin’s playing has such clarity, charm and colour, command over the entire keyboard and ability to convey moods from poignancy to wit. Whilst the liner notes are brief (the music itself does not need huge analysis as the listener can easily be swept along by its beauty), it’s always interesting for musicians to read about the piano recorded or even the performance space. The sounds captured her is without blemish, so the producers as well as the pianist must be congratulated.
